There are no "golden rules" when it comes to the perfect length of a blog post. The benchmarks that you find online aren't based on your target group, product or service, not to mention all other factors that play a role. But, there are some generalities and trends that you can keep in mind while writing. We’ve listed a few facts & upcoming trends to help you improve your content.
Google's definition of a blog
A text must contain at least 300 words to be seen as a blog by Google. According to them, with fewer words, you cannot offer the value that a reader is looking for. Publishing a post with 250 words makes little to no sense because your page will not be indexed as a blog.
New trends in the blogging industry [according to experts]
Nevertheless, a striking trend has recently emerged. SEO experts claim that working with a maximum of 66 words or 200 characters, also known as microblogging, is the right thing to do from now on. Our opinion? Rather, use this as a guideline for posting on social media. Lately, we’re seeing longer captions appear over there.
The opposite phenomenon is also showing up. Articles are becoming more extensive, with over more than 2000 words. Search Engine & Digital Marketing Expert, Neil Patel, says that the ideal blog contains around 2000 up to 3000 words. The longer your blog posts, the greater the chance that other websites will link to your articles and the more keywords they can contain. Two plus points for your SEO!
"I ran out of words"
Letting the length of your blog depend on its content remains by far one of the most important rules. The more difficult your subject, the more words you will need to convey your message. Above all, don't be afraid to write too much or too little, follow your gut feeling.
Our golden rule
Invest time in the quality of your content and not in its length. A long blog full of crap won’t be read by anyone! A short blog that offers no answers is not much better. Having difficulties wrapping your head around writing? Our Ultimate Blog Guide [10 Steps-by-step] will help you on your way!
If you still want to impose yourself a certain length, go for blogs with at least 900 words and aim for blogs having (more than) 2000 words. Remember: always experiment and discover what your unique reader wants!
